Coretan Principal

Q-dees HQ's target for my centre - 85 students in 2010 bearing in mind 34 students graduated this year. So far, all except for 3 children have re-enrolled with us. 2 of them are siblings - their Mom thinks the elder daughter cant cope with our syllabus; takkan nak separate kan both, adik stays kat Q-dees, kakak sekolah lain. I personally want to coach the elder sister after school FOC(and decided not to ferry any children home next year), but Mom thinks its better for her daughters to go to other school. Well, their mothers know best...The other student has to change to other school because her parents will be moving out soon. Alhamdulillah, my re-enrolment for the past 3 years not less than 95%...

This does not mean we can rest on our laurels. A few more kindies dah naik kat my area. To stay competitive, we need to improve in all aspects. Next year will be our 4th year in biz. 2011 will be our 5th year and the year for me to decide whether to renew my Franchise Agreement for another 5 years. Definitely I want to renew & I'm left with no option but to work harder so that I can reach my target and also the HQ's target every year...

So far, another 25% before I reach the target...not too bad considering that Malay parents like to enrol their child/ren at the very last minute.

Speaking about Malay parents, my friends whose centres are in urban areas told me how lucky I am to have a centre in a malay community, that its not easy to satisfy non-Malay parents. I think mana2 pun sama je.

From my experience, Malay parents, some of them do not complain but if they dont like satu bende, no matter how small it is, they just pull out their child. A few new customers when asked kenapa abg/kakak last time pergi sek lain & now adik nak register kat Q-dees (so that I can make sure these new customers wont experience the same bad experience again at my school), the answers I received -

1) mkn biskut je, anak x kenyang, how to concentrate
2) no personal touch; my child takut nak gi sek
3) confined space; i want my child to move & hv fun in preschool
4) too academic; kesian anak I - tak merasa the joy of learning
5) byk sgt homework & my child baru 5 years old
6) my child dah setahun kat situ, still tak tau baca

Some of them have read my blog. I guess by reading my blog, they know me personally & maybe to them its very important for them to know the person who will be responsible to take care of their child/ren...

I would like to share my meetings with some of the parents.

A mom called me :

"Puan, saya nak register anak saya di tadika Puan, but my daughter speaks & understands English only"

I said to myself, "O O not another one" but I told this Mom to drop by at my centre & we can discuss about that. She has to look at the programme first.

She came with 2 daughters tagging along. Kakak in primary school pakai tudung. The mother pakai tudung & pakai simple je...She told me that they just came back from the US after staying there for 5 years. Her daughter, born & bred in the US..She said as long as there is atleast a teacher who can converse with her daughter, thats good enough.

After showing her the books, she still had doubt written on her face...

"Teacher, do you think my daughter will have fun in school? I'm impressed with the books but I want my daughter to have fun too"

I showed her our Fliptec@Q programme & convince her that the children will have ample time to play outside...then only I could see she smiling...

And she told me her reason why she wants to make sure that her daughter to hv fun in school

'Saya mengajar di one of public Unis. I have many students, still in their 2nd year coming to see me & telling me that diaorg dah penat belajar. Dr tadika sampai U, parents push them to the max. Some even ambik course yg parents dia org suka, bukan their choice. They are not isolated cases. I dont want my daughters to suffer just like these students'...

My mission has always been for the children to hv fun in school. We revamp our Art syllabus & next year the children will learn more nursery rhymes, childrens songs in Malay & nasyid during circle time...

We have more than 20 kindies here but none of the kindies ada gazebo like ours. The children love the gazebo so much - they role play, bring their colouring books from home & colour kat situ, sembang2, play hide & seek...the list is endless...If not because of budget constraint, I would hv built a swimming pool there because I own the hse (one of the advantages of owning the house & not renting)...this remains my dream as of now...

Another experience :

They came to see me last time...& this year they came again.

The son, a very polite boy, well-behaved - every Principal's dream to hv a student like this boy but I dont think any Principals can tolerate the father's demand. Security wise, I can guarantee your child will be safe in school, insya allah. How can I guarantee that the child who only speaks English takkan switch to BM when speaking to his friends? His friends anak Melayu (this fact made known to all parents that my school mmg semua anak Melayu. I'm not racist, but I cant be blamed kalau non-Malay parents want to send their child to schools yg principal non-Malays / the teachers are non-Malays)... As much as possible we will try our best to help the children but I cant guarantee that your child will speak fluent English unless the parents themselves communicate in English at home.

I've put up 50 buntings along the road & distributed 5000 flyers, you hv read my blog & see happy faces of the children who study in our school but let me tell you one thing - I get many students every year not so much because of the buntings, flyers, advertisement in major newspapers but through word of mouth...& I would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents who have supported us all this while...May Allah bless you & your family..
